About UN University (UNU)

The United Nations University (UNU) is an international community of scholars engaged in policy-oriented research, capacity development and dissemination of knowledge in furthering the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. The mission of UNU is to contribute, through research and capacity building, to efforts to resolve the pressing global problems that are the concern of the United Nations and its Member States.

For the past four decades, UNU has been a go-to think tank for impartial research on human survival, conflict prevention, sustainable development, and welfare. With more than 400 researchers in 12 countries, UNU's work spans the 17 Sustainable Development Goals' full breadth, generating policy-relevant knowledge to effect positive global change. UNU maintains more than 200 collaborations with UN agencies and leading universities and research institutions across the globe. For more information, please visit http://unu.edu

United Nations University - Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS):

UNU-EHS, established in December 2003, is part of the UNU system, a worldwide network of Research and Training Institutes. Its mission is to advance human security through knowledge-based approaches to reducing vulnerability and environmental risks. For more information, please visit www.ehs.unu.edu.

Environmental Vulnerability & Ecosystem Services (EVES) Section

The position is hosted by the EVES section at UNU-EHS, which conducts original, policy relevant research addressing the vulnerability and resilience of social-ecological systems. Specifically, EVES aims to understand how social ecological systems are affected by environmental hazards of diverse nature such as water and land degradation, floods, droughts, and other hazards. EVES not only considers the impacts of single hazards, but also investigates multiple hazard situations, identifying cumulating or cascading impacts and feedbacks between hazards of contrasting nature such as floods and droughts, and how the management of ecosystems can be considered as strategies for disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. The concept of ecosystem services is of central importance in most of the EVES research.

RRR-Coast project

The RRR-Coast project (“Towards a green and inclusive post-pandemic recovery of the Blue Economy and coastal communities”) aims to provide science-based guidance for post COVID recovery of coastal communities through a trans-national comparative study across coastal areas in Costa Rica, Germany (Northern Wadden Sea), Scotland (UK), and the USA. Coastal regions are important because they are typically densely populated and have a significant contribution to the economy, often referred to as Blue Economy. Coastal regions experienced significant drops in numbers of tourists and economic losses for other industries, which all impacted coastal communities. Impacts, responses and their consequences on vulnerabilities and equity in coastal communities, and potential for recovery, are so far under-studied, which are the knowledge gaps addressed by the RRR-Coast project.
